The Crowell and Wysong Families

The Crowell Family

    Immigrant: Johann Michael Graul
    Immigration date: after 1733         
    Relationship: My 6th great grandfather  
    Origins: Heuchelheim, Germany
    Religion: Probably Lutheran. Some Crowell's
            were German Baptist Brethren/Dunkers in later years
    Occupation: Farmer

Johann Michael Graul/Crowell was born about 1705 in Heuchelheim, Germany, which is near Wetzlar in the current state of Hesse. He married Sybilla Elizabetha Fillman (Fulman), and they immigrated to Pennsylvania sometime after 1733, and settled around Reading in Berks County. He died in 1774 in PA. Their children include:

Henry Crowell married second: Elizabeth McLaughlin in 1819. They had Susan(1826), Elizabeth, and Henry.
Our line continues with Joseph Crowell and Mary McLaughlin, but very little is known about them. They had a son James W. Crowell, born in Pulaski, VA. James married Nancy Hurst on 25 March 1852. He fought in the Civil War with Company C., 4th Virginia Infantry and was killed in the battle of First Manassas (Bull Run) on 21 July 1861. He was 30 years old. The children of James and Nancy were:

The Wysong Family

    Immigrant: Ludwig Wysong (Lodvick Weissang)
    Immigration date: before 1733         
    Relationship:  5th great grandfather  
    Origins: Saarland, Germany (possibly St. Ingbert)
    Religion: Lutheran & Catholic in Germany (some also joined "Dunkers")                            
    Occupation: Farmer

The original name in Germany was Weissang. Back in 16th Century France, it had been Vincent (the two are pronounced the same).

Ludwig Wysong is first found in America in York, PA around 1733. He married Mary Hammer and had the following children:

Valentine became a brickmaker and also operated a grist mill in nearby Franklin Co. In 1816 he moved his family to Montgomery Co., OH, then moved again in 1817 to White River Twp., Randolph Co., IN.
